The Eternal City of Temples

History of Ujjain City

Ujjain, one of India’s oldest cities, has been a center of spirituality, learning, and trade for centuries. Situated on the banks of the Kshipra River, it was the capital of the Avanti Kingdom and home to the legendary ruler Vikramaditya. The city is most famous for the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, a revered Hindu pilgrimage site.

Ujjain flourished under the Mauryas, Guptas, and Marathas, serving as a hub for scholars like Kalidasa and Varahamihira. It hosts the grand Kumbh Mela (Simhastha Kumbh) every 12 years, attracting millions of devotees. Today, Ujjain blends its ancient heritage with modern development, remaining a timeless symbol of India’s rich cultural and religious traditions.
